Romania’s Air Travel Soars Beyond Pre-Pandemic Heights

Romania’s Air Travel Soars Beyond Pre-Pandemic Heights

Romania’s airports served 24.5 million passengers in 2023, breaking the previous record set in 2019, according to data from the Association of Romanian Airports.

This figure represents a 6% increase compared to pre-pandemic levels and a 17% rise over 2022.

Bucharest Leads Airport Traffic Resurgence

The Otopeni Airport in Bucharest accounted for the largest share of passengers in 2023 at 14.69 million.

Other top airports included Cluj-Napoca at over 3.2 million travelers, Iasi with 2.3 million, and Timișoara at 1.35 million.

Newer Airports Take Flight

Romania’s newer airports saw significant passenger growth last year.

The recently opened Brasov Airport served nearly 79,000 visitors since its June 2023 launch, surpassing longer-standing airports in Tulcea, Arad, Satu Mare, and Bucharest-Băneasa.

ETIAS to Streamline EU Entry

Romania’s rising flight volumes come ahead of the European Travel Information and Authorization System’s (ETIAS) 2025 launch.

Once implemented, the ETIAS will require pre-travel clearance for visitors from over 60 countries entering the EU’s Schengen Area without visas for stays under 90 days.

With more flights and travelers anticipated, the ETIAS promises simplified Schengen access through online applications.

As an EU member, Romania’s growing connectivity should prove increasingly valuable for hassle-free vacations and business trips.

Opportunity Flies High for New Arrivals

Spiraling air traffic and expanded airport capabilities also bode well for Romania’s appeal to immigrants and digital nomads.

The country offers relatively affordable living costs compared to much of the EU, helping stretch relocation budgets.

English proficiency has likewise risen over the years among younger Romanians especially.

With more nonstop routes from global hubs, Romania can better attract international students, remote workers, entrepreneurs, and more wanting to tap into the promise of EU citizenship.

Outlook Remains Sunny for Romania’s Skies

With air traffic already exceeding pre-pandemic levels across Romania, the country’s airports can expect rosy prospects in 2024 and beyond.

As the aviation industry rebounds worldwide, Romania is poised to capture a growing share of travelers seeking Eastern European destinations.

Continued airport upgrades and potential new flight routes should further bolster passenger volume.

For Romanians and visitors alike, the opportunities for air travel appear boundless on the horizon.
