Prague Tourism Surges 28% in 2023 as City Plans Further Growth

Prague has seen a significant increase in tourism numbers so far in 2023, with around 5.45 million visitors flocking to the Czech capital in the year’s first three quarters.

This reflects a 28% jump compared to the same period last year.

Rising Asian Arrivals Boost Numbers

According to newly released data from Prague City Tourism, the municipal body overseeing tourism, international arrivals accounted for around 78% of visitors.

The remaining 22% of tourists hailed from within the Czech Republic.

A key highlight was the near-doubling of tourist numbers from Asia during the January-September period.

This surge coincided with the July launch of direct flights to Seoul and Taipei.

South Korean visitors soared 287% to 110,276, while Taiwanese tourists saw a massive 1091% leap to 46,293 individuals.

Petřín Tower Proves Most Popular

Among attractions managed by Prague City Tourism, Petrin Lookout Tower emerged as the most visited in the first three quarters. It drew 606,768 visitors, up 74,000 year-on-year.

This indicates a diversification, with tourists venturing beyond the usual heritage zones.

The Prague Visitor Pass, covering attractions across the city, has encouraged this shift.

Strategic Moves to Entice More Visitors

Moving forward, Prague City Tourism aims to boost collaboration with Vaclav Havel Airport and CzechTourism.

A key 2024 focus will be the Touchpoint platform, prioritizing long-haul flight support to further improve connectivity and grow tourism.

With strategic initiatives to expand joint efforts, Prague looks to maintain and strengthen its global appeal as a vibrant, diverse destination for worldwide travelers.

ETIAS to Facilitate Travel for Non-EU Citizens

With the anticipated launch of the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) in May 2025, Prague is poised to become even more accessible to long-term and repeat visitors from outside the EU.

ETIAS will allow travelers from over 60 countries to obtain easy pre-travel authorization for short EU trips, benefitting digital nomads, students, investors, and families alike.

The streamlined process will encourage multi-entry long stays.

This aligns with Prague’s goal of strengthening its appeal worldwide, aided by direct Asian flights.

ETIAS will further boost tourist flows from Asia and beyond.

Schengen Visa Policies Support Tourism Growth

Czechia’s open Schengen visa policies have enabled rising inflows from Asia, reflected in the 287% and 1091% jumps in South Korean and Taiwanese tourists respectively this year.

Moving forward, Prague can expect updated Schengen rules to sustain growth by facilitating repeat travel and lengthened stays for legitimate visitors.

Alongside ETIAS, friendlier visa regulations will allow the city to solidify its stature as a premier destination.

A Must-Visit Destination Enhancing Its Allure

Prague’s enduring popularity is evidenced by its ranking as eighth in Lonely Planet's “Top 10 Cities” for 2024. Its rich history and striking architecture cement its status as a premier global destination.

Having also placed second for solo travelers in September 2023, Prague’s exceptional safety and welcoming atmosphere make it a standout choice.

With tourism already up 28% this year, the Czech jewel can expect its visitor numbers to keep glittering in the years ahead.
