Finland Closes Border with Russia Again

The Finnish government announced on December 14th it will once again close all border crossings with Russia starting December 15th until January 14th, 2024.

This decision comes after authorities found instrumented entries into Finland continued despite some crossings reopening on December 13th.

“A Sign of Hybrid Warfare”

According to Interior Minister Mari Rantanen, the continued entries are “a sign that the Russian authorities are continuing their hybrid operation against Finland.”

She stated this is something Finland “will not tolerate.”

Authorities believe the entries have been aided by foreign governments or other actors, with possible criminal elements involved.

This type of irregular immigration is considered a serious threat to Finland’s national security and public order.

Only Airport, Seaport Crossings Open

With land border crossings now closed, applications for international protection will only be accepted at airport and seaport crossings.

The Vaalimaa and Niirala crossings had reopened on December 13th, with plans to gradually ease restrictions. However, after continued instrumented entries Thursday, the government held an emergency session and passed a resolution to once again shutter border crossings.

Finland shares a 830-mile border with Russia.

Tensions have escalated since Finland applied for NATO membership in May 2022, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Impact on Travelers Seeking Entry

The border closing will affect European Union (EU) visitors and immigrants to Finland, especially those seeking to enter via land crossings.

Long-term travelers like families, investors, and students may need to enter through airports or seaports.

Starting May 2025, the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) will help enhance border security.

Short-term travelers from certain will need to apply for authorization to travel to countries in the Schengen Area, including Finland.

Applying for authorization beforehand will streamline security checks, ensuring easy access to travelers cleared to enter the EU country of their choice.

Effect on EU Immigration Policies

The incident may influence EU nations’ immigration policies regarding Russia.

With Finland closing land crossings, other EU states may increase scrutiny of Russian immigrants.

However, as an EU member, Finland’s situation is unique given the long shared border with Russia.

The border security move is seen as specifically responding to rising Russia tensions.

Border Security Heightened

The closing highlights Finland’s ongoing struggles with Russian pressure amid the alliance bid.

Authorities remain vigilant for threats to national security and border integrity.
