Bulgaria Gains Momentum as Top European Destination in 2024 by ECTAA

Sofia, Bulgaria has cemented its status as an up-and-coming European tourist hotspot.

As part of a collaborative campaign between the European Travel Agents’ and Tour Operators' Association (ECTAA) and Bulgaria’s Ministry of Tourism, the country will serve as ECTAA’s Preferred Destination in 2024.

This honor provides Bulgaria with the opportunity to showcase its cultural and natural offerings to over 80,000 travel industry professionals across Europe.

Ripe for Discovery

With stunning landscapes, historical sites, and expansive biodiversity across different terrains, Bulgaria offers countless sights and activities for travelers of all interests.

The Ministry of Tourism will promote the country’s extensive yet often overlooked offerings through ECTAA’s expansive network of travel agents and tour operators.

By granting Bulgaria Preferred Destination status, ECTAA aims to reposition the country as a competitive, must-see European destination.

“We strongly believe that Bulgaria could become one of the most competitive countries in European tourism and that holidaymakers could enjoy a totally new experience in this country,” said ECTAA Secretary General Eric Drésin.

Incoming Opportunities

ECTAA will facilitate market access and relationships between European travel professionals and Bulgaria’s destination management companies, unlocking a trove of potential partnerships and business opportunities.

As part of the Preferred Destination program, ECTAA has scheduled online forums catered to educating agents and operators about promoting tourism in Bulgaria.

The association also plans an increased social media presence highlighting Bulgaria’s vast biodiversity and commitment to sustainability.

With tourism embracing environmentally and socially conscious practices, the country’s lush nature and cultural heritage could attract visitors supporting responsible travel.

Spotlight on Sofia

A pivotal element of ECTAA’s 2024 Bulgaria campaign is the hosting of ECTAA’s annual general meeting in Sofia this October.

The event expects to convene high-level industry executives and stakeholders from across Europe to strategize the elevation of Bulgaria's travel reputation.

The Future of Open Borders

ECTAA’s announcement coincides with Bulgaria's recent acceptance into Europe's Schengen Area pact by March 2024, opening borders and easing travel barriers across 27 European nations.

While land border discussions persist, the greenlighting of open-air and sea connections will facilitate increased traffic and accessibility.

In confirming Bulgaria’s partial Schengen integration, Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov recognized Austria’s support during recent negotiations.

Bulgaria’s adoption into the Schengen zone signals a milestone for the country’s global integration and should bolster incoming tourism.

Simplified Travel on the Horizon

Bulgaria’s adoption into Europe’s borderless Schengen Area will directly impact tourists and immigrants from dozens of countries around the world.

By May 2025, visa-exempt non-European Union (EU) visitors will need to obtain an ETIAS travel authorization to enter the Schengen Area.

However, Bulgaria’s membership is positioned to ease and streamline ETIAS applications for Balkan arrivals.

With Bulgaria integrated under unified Schengen immigration policies, travelers from countries like the United States and the United Kingdom can explore the region freely after entering any external Schengen border.

Bulgaria’s open borders will enable simplified multi-country European trips involving reduced red tape.

A Turning Point for Immigration

Bulgaria’s approval to enter Europe’s integrated Schengen Area signals a pivotal shift regarding the country’s broader immigration policies.

As Bulgaria adopts Europe’s open border policies, the government faces external pressure to align domestic immigration laws with Schengen Area standards.

Changes could include easing restrictions on non-EU work visa candidates to address local labor shortages, particularly in Bulgaria’s swelling IT sector.

With the sweeping launch of the ETIAS scheme in 2025, Bulgaria will unite with 26 European countries under shared security screening and immigration enforcement policies.

The country’s adoption of Schengen policies marks a monumental turning point for both travel freedom and internal immigration reform.

An Undiscovered Experience Awaits

With swelling investment and open access on the horizon, Bulgaria tightens its grip as an emerging leader in European tourism.

Boasting unmatched history and sights off the beaten tourist track, this once-overlooked destination prepares to dazzle visitors seeking authenticity and sustainability.

“We are sure that the ‘Preferred Destination’ program will result in better and stronger relations between Bulgaria’s incoming agents and our members,” said Secretary General Drésin.

As endorsements roll in from travel authorities like ECTAA, the world should be ready to discover Bulgaria’s hidden treasures.

The future shines bright for the budding Balkan hotspot.
